My Favourite Kindle E-Books

The Kindle!

Recently I discovered the Kindle and it's been great, a huge variety of books at stupidly low prices. Alot of the books are pretty unique due to the nature of Self-Publishing on Amazon so there's alot of stuff you really can't find anywhere else - and some of it is amazing. Alot of it is utter rubbish too but you can download a free sample (which is usually about 30 pages so you get a decent idea). Amazon Kindle has rocketed to the top of the e-book selling industry and has made millionaires out of many of the self-publishing authors that use it, the zero-start up cost and ability to get your novels out there to a massive audience at no cost is a huge bonus, as well as allowing for Authors to have Final Edit rights instead of having a Publishing company change it to suite a larger demographic. Another knock on to the zero-start up cost is that the e-books can be priced much lower than paperback or hardback books due to simply being a Text file that you download. I really do recommend Amazon Kindle to anyone that enjoys reading.

Most of them will be Science Fiction/Zombie reads, as that's just my taste.

1. Origins (Spinward Fringe)

One of my first kindle buys, a great read! Written by Randolph Lalonde. It's got some amazing twists and the characterization is some of the best I've ever read, to be honest I usually root for the bad guys but in this book I just couldn't because the good guys were so badass. It's set in time where Humans have long since left the "Sol System" and have reached way out into the universe with other races, colonising endless galaxies. I can't really say much about the plot without giving it away but, the main character starts as a desk jockey, turns into a space warlord turned bounty hunter, and then pretty much a Demi-God of Destruction. It's got a number of sequels which I bought straight away too, and another one is soon to be released. For $2.99 you really can't knock this author. I read the whole series back to back and even skipped sleep.

2. The Killing Moon

This is Post-Apocalyptic, set in Northern England. Written by Rod Glenn, I thought this book was very original for a post-apoc read. It presents scary possibilities really, starting off with pretty much a meltdown of global politics as Fossil Fuels run out, entire continents start forming Alliances and fighting over Oil, you're graphically told everything that leads upto the world-changing event, which makes Oil look like the worlds smallest problem. You're then quickly snapped back into the world of this small family in Northern England, a mother and father-to-be having to escape from the cities and begin living a rural, self-sufficient life. When the kids grow up they face all kinds of challenges, outlaws, mutants that run on all fours (cool right?) and at times, extremely disturbing acts of violence. This book is very relevent to modern day and brings a new angle to the Post-Apocalyptic genre.

Day by Day Armageddon
Amazon Price: $7.24
List Price: $15.00

3. Day by Day Armageddon

Written by J.L.Bourne this book is a gritty Zombie-Killing, Home-Barricading, Weapons-Gathering, Gore-Filled must for any zombie fan. It follows a US Air Force Pilot (original I know) when the Zombie Plague hits his home city, the book's written in the form of Diary Entries hence the name Day by Day - I believe this book actually began on an internet forum shared by Zombie-Genre enthusiasts that enjoyed writing fictional journal entries, and this one journal got so much attention that he decided to self-publish on Amazon. It doesn't bring anything new, but it's an extremely easy read and for anyone that's ever fantasized about what weapons they would choose, or which supermarket they'd turn into a zombie-repelling fortress - this is a book for you.

Swarm: Star Force Series #1
Amazon Price: $9.99

4. Swarm

Written by B.V.Larson (A pretty popular sci-fi author on Amazon), this one's pretty special too. It's fairly short I thought, and only took a couple of hours to get through but I thoroughly enjoyed it, because it's different from anything I've read before. It involves a lot of problem solving and says a lot about Human Nature and creating order in chaos. It's basically about a gorup of Alien ships that travel to Earth looking for Commanders to pilot said spaceships against "The Enemy" who want nothing good for Earth. Well worth the few hours I spent on it, wished there was a sequel but we can't have it all.

Zombie Fallout
Amazon Price: $0.99

5. Zombie Fallout

By Mark Tufo. Yes, I know, another Zombie book... I can't help myself, so what if I have dreamed of the day when the zombie apocalypse befalls the Earth (I'm ofcourse immune), a man needs a dream even if it is dark. The book follows Mark Talbot, a survivalist hard-man with a soft-heart for his family and is stuck in a battle to protect them from a never ending and unforgiving horde of zombies. This ones probably one of the few horror books to ever force a shiver down my spine, it touches on the supernatural a little in the form of a "Zombie Queen" that stalks the Talbot's, and it really has some terrifying moments that make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, making you truly expect to turn around and see a rotting zombie leaping towards you. The sequel doesn't disappoint either and after a couple cliffhangers left in the original, it's hard not to continue.
